I've used X-cart in the past, and they're still ran by the same company so... avoid at all costs. Don't ever pay for it. Don't even use it for free. To give you an idea, I had a client on the paid cart long ago that cost I think $450. He sold physical goods via UPS and USPS. USPS had alerted all vendors of an upcoming change to their API a year ahead. Well, the cut off date rolls around and the X-cart devs have no fix. My client can no longer offer USPS shipping, and all the other stores offering it can't accept. It required community members to fix the core code. X-cart didn't implement a patch for months. The other thing is pretty much all of the third party developers I bought from used IonCube for their modules so you have no idea what's in them nor can you edit them. Shopify is a great hosted solution, can't really say anything bad about that. For self-hosted you should take a look at Prestashop (the 1.6 branch) or ThirtyBees (a fork of Prestashop 1.6). It's free, the code is straightforward. Third party modules are hit or miss on quality (mostly miss) but no ioncube.

I've evaluated just about every shopping cart. Not a big fan of ProStores. Right now I like X-cart. It's PHP based so you can easily find somebody to customize and you can buy dozens of great extensions for very little.
