I really wanted an on prem system, but I somehow ended up implementing happyfox hosted and it was super easy to setup and the pricing is good and SSO isn't held back to their higher tiers. It also includes a knowledge base which was a nice to have.
Happyfox help desk software is a viable alternative to zendesk which has 30-day trial and knowledge base feature to build on.
