I am part of a small in-house team at a private university, and we use Canto Flight. They offer competitive pricing, Cloud-based storage, an intuitive interface, multiple-platform access, customizable privileges for each account, and efficient tagging/searching capabilities. We are currently using the system to store photography--we have thousands of photos--but it has the ability to store any file type. Flight has made locating and sharing assets so much easier! You can categorize assets in folders and albums, include descriptions on individual assets, link similar assets, include the same asset in multiple albums, set expiration dates, and send comments to other team members regarding assets. You can also set up lightboxes, called Collections, for a particular project or to share. It's very easy to use. Another plus is their customer service--we have had great experiences from the initial inquiry to the onboarding process, and even now we can contact our representative if we have any questions or suggestions, and we'll get a timely response. Flight has been a great solution for our needs.
I personally tried Canto 6 months ago and I didn't like how the tagging system worked on multiple objects. My impression was that it is more suitable for small number of assets. Much more less than one thousand.
Check it out. My friend uses this a lot and loves it. I don't think he uses WP with it but it does list as being able to integrate with it. Should be right up your alley.
