The only issue I see with the United card is that unless you're flying United a lot, it's useless after the first year, not worth the $95. The Sapphire Preferred is great the first year, then you can convert it to the no-fee Chase Freedom, which has rolling 5% cashback categories.

The United MileagePlus Explorer was my first card as well, and like others have said it's definitely worth it for the first free year. The bonus is amazing, especially since you can find round-trip United flights from the US to South America for 50k miles alone. One thing I'd like to mention is that the card has a fee for international use. I was shocked to see I was charged an extra 3% when I booked a car rental reservation with a foreign company. I assumed that because it was an airline card it would be travel friendly. My mistake.

I travel for work and it made sense to get this card since I live near a United hub and can expense out the cost of my flight (company allows me to buy my own ticket). I was able to get the Signature Visa version so it comes with primary car insurance protection for auto rentals which is excellent to have. This card does have a foreign transaction fee which I found weird - just use another card if you can! The $95 statement credit will pay for itself after just 4 flights (if you don't have status) when you consider that a checked bag costs you an extra $25.
