I settled on the brady BMP41 and self laminating labels. Its not cheap but does a superb job. Self laminating have a small writable area, then a strip of clear label that wraps several times around the cable, protecting the text. After applying its not easy to remove which I was happy to see, and the clear material is slightly squishy, it sticks extremely well to itself as its wrapped around.

I use a Brady BMP41. I've got a Word template that does a mail merge from an Excel file. I can pre-plan all my labels in Excel and then print a label for both ends in a batch after connecting it with USB to my laptop. Great little machine.

I used it (BMP21 ) and went up to the BMP41 for more labels that can be used and the backlit screen. Very nice labelers.
